Letters to Ultraman: Ultraman

Dear Ultraman,

Well, here we are - yours is the last 'Letter to Ultraman'. I know Tsuburaya counts your pre-series airing as Ultraman Day, but excuse me if I prefer your official beginnings.

45 Earth years ago a recruit of the Space Garrison chased a rogue monster to Earth, and bumped into a Terran with a similar defensive role (in more ways than one). They were together for only a short time, but it was enough. For the first time in modern history, a stronger type of light had touched the blue planet. And so it continues to touch us, protecting the weak and guiding the lost.

I wonder sometimes, what is the human to the Ultran. Are we but another small insignificant race? Comrades, just very much smaller? A glimpse into a distant past, before a sun exploded and a people transcended their limits? I think back to the contingent of humans who finally made it/will make it to the Land of Light, 10 000 years after my own time, and the light that is too strong for them. And there, I falter.

Perhaps another 10 thousand years may pass, then, before we may stand upon your shores as you did on ours...

An Ultraman, a sword of the shining grounds, has the duty of an Ultraman. A human has the duty of a human. For now, may we both continue to fulfil our roles, Your captain once said that he looked forward to the day when Ultraman and human would stand side by side in space. I share his sentiment.

Happy Birthday, old man. So much has happened, and so much more still could. I hope they're good things. Whatever anyone else might say, we have come a long way.

I'll see you around,

Letters to Ultraman: Zoffy

Dear Zoffy,

Salutations, Captain. How have you been doing? Not falling off any more buildings or getting your head set on fire, I hope.

What we see of you seems to swing between two extremes: the super badass Zoffy that fights in the Ultran War, helps Earth and sacrifices himself for his brothers, and the super klutzy Zoffy that gets his head set on fire, falls of buildings and gets thrown into electrical fields.

It was the first Zoffy that really impressed me, when I saw him in Gekiden. Seeing you take command of the Brothers, lead them into battle and handle the Psy-Baltan onslaught while the others fought the Steel Devas was outstanding. This guy was super special. I wrote fanfiction about this Zoffy. He had a woman who loved him, a mission to accomplish, and a destiny to fulfil.

It was just as cheesy as it sounds. But I promise you that one day it will be rewritten, and it will be much, much better.

But the second Zoffy puzzled me, because he was just as valid as the previous one. He was the same person, but...utterly lacking.. How could this have happened? Wasn't he supposed to be cool?

It took some years, witnessing you flipflop between these two extremes (oh, the flipflops) but then I did realise one thing: this guy didn't have to be cool, or uncool. He just had to be Zoffy: Zoffy, eldest of the Ultra Brothers, war veteran, earnest and upright and dignified, fighting for his brothers and the tiny people under his charge. He had bad days and good days, but through it all he tried his hardest at all he did. That was enough.

Still, try not to fall off any more buildings, please. You're better than that. You must admit cool Zoffy is so much more attractive.

Letters to Ultraman: Ultraseven

Seven,

Well, I knew this day would come eventually. This is not going to be a kind letter. Far from it.

Ever heard of this book called Papa is Ultraseven? Miyanishi Tatsuya wrote and illustrated it. It's part of a trilogy. Your daughter narrates them. Within them, 'Papa' is strict, but ultimately kind, and has little resistance for his wife's nagging, daughter's girlish charms or his son's first attempts at crawling and walking.

I mention this because Papa!Seven is probably a hundred times better at being a father than you.

Without resorting to too much profanity, Seven, what in blue blazes happened? You lost your mother at an early age, the books say. Surely you of all people should see the value of having two parents in a child's life. You had a son and I presume a wife. What led you to abandon both of them? Did you stand by your woman? Were you there for your son's first milestones? Why were you so reluctant to contact him through thousands of years? (And on a grimmer, societal note, why is everyone okay with this?!)

Your writers do you no justice by noting that perhaps this mystery 'is for Seven's sake'. I assure you it is not. It turned a guy I was slightly above neutral for to the only Ultraman I actually hate. Because when the chips fell, you ran. Or you hid. Take your pick. And when your clueless son needed you, you kept your silence.

Perhaps you have your reasons. Actual, logical reasons, though I doubt this also. But let's hear the truth one day, anyway, whether they're actually for your sake or no. And right now, do right by your son. One barbeque does not millennia erase. Actually BE with him, and give him a sense of his roots and some stability. You are several thousand years behind. And so much less than what you could be.

Work a miracle. A proper one, for the family you have left.

Letters to Ultraman: Jack

Dear Jack,

It all began with you, about twenty years ago. The days were long, worry was a far-off concept and I had this tall friend called 'Abang (Big Brother) Goh'.

For the series that started me off, there is very little that I remember of it—but it made enough of an impression to keep me watching Ultraman, and then enough to buy a certain obscure translated comic at a rest stop on a roadtrip years after that. Odd how the human mind works. I distinctly remember your fighting a red-haired, friendly monster, but it got very confusing. The next thing I know, the monster's dead, it's surrounded by Ultrans, you're reaching out to touch its bloodied face and then it's Ultra Father, being taken back to the Land of Light.

Any Ultrafan worth their salt should have discovered some...discrepancies with this account. I have not yet decoded what this memory could be based on. Like I said, it's odd how the human mind works.

The way I see it, you're the everyman's Ultra. You try, and you fight, and you make the best of it. But you and Goh still sacrifice a metric ton of things along the way. Friends. Dreams. Love. Korotan Bunko #127 says an Ultraman has three weaknesses: cold, Colour Timer, and emotional unrest. Guess who they use to illustrate all of them?

Still, you pressed on. Not emotional torture, nor the hardest fight, nor staff to the throat (remember that obscure manga?) was enough to make you quit. It seemed that you truly gave your all to the battle. My poor Jack. The world really dealt you a craptacular hand, but you rolled with it like a champ. In my eyes that is your greatest strength: your quiet endurance. Your persistence and honour in seeing duty through gives me great strength in turn.

Without your influence, I probably wouldn't be sitting here writing these letters. You will always have a special place in my heart, where the sun is bright and the worries few, and Abang Goh is a hero for three almighty minutes.

Letters to Ultraman: Ace

Dear Ace,

"Never lose your kindness. Never lose the desire to care for the weak, to help one another, or be friends with people from any other countries. Even if such a desire should be betrayed hundreds of times."

Funny how a man who says this is pegged as the joker outside canon.

It was, to put it simply, a fluke. When Gekiden was reprinted, Kurihara Jin revealed that writer Sagawa Ryu told him not to absolutely not pull any jokes with Man or Seven...but you were fair game. He placed you in that role without really knowing what you were about.

That fluke turned you into the semi-canon joker from that point forward. Yet this is the same man who loses his love in the line of duty (twice if you count Mabune's Story 0). The wandering swordsman of Ultra Ninja Manual, poor in coin but rich in friends. The young fighter who refuses to leave his brothers to certain death, because he has already lost one family and isn't about to forsake the one he has now. In all of them there is honour and courage and strength. And kindness.

I've only watched a little bit of your time on Earth. Even then I can tell they've missed out. I will never not take you seriously, yet I like that honest humour. It makes sense that you would try to make your own happiness and share it with others.

I'm hardly qualified to preach, but don't let your losses in love get you down. One day you're going to find someone. Someone who won't leave. And you know, I think even though you lost both your parents at a young age, some day you'll be a terrific dad. The funny one, who makes his kids smile. You had good role models around you.

I'll try to keep your wish alive. Gods, it is HARD, but I will try.

Letters to Ultraman: Father of Ultra

Dear Ultra Father,

They say that the Emperan War--what is now called the Great Ultran War--was won in a decisive fight, finally ending with the leader of each army duking it out, mano-a-mano, with swords.

I refuse to believe this.

For one thing, Zoffy was said to have fought in this war (hence the Star Marks on his chest), leaving 5 thousand years and more between the arrival of the Emperan and this war's eventual end. For another, wars do not generally end with mano-a-mano battles. They are fought by every man and woman, down to surrender or defeat, whichever comes first. Sometimes not even then.

So an occupation, then, an Emperan occupation. A time during which you saw four or five children born, never suspecting that they would join your son on a distant planet in a distant solar system one day. A time when men rose, whether they were brave or no, and fought to take back their world from alien hands. A time when people were maimed, scarred, killed. A dark time.

And from that dark time, you and your comrades reforged the light. The Garrison rose, with you as its first captain; without it, we would never have known your giant silver-skinned kind on Earth. One of your comrade's children became your own, and you started your own family. A family that grew as large as the Garrison, with sons and daughters of the shining grounds who called you 'Father' with equal parts respect and affection.

My thanks, Commander Ken, for your service. No, it was not one man's fight. But you were surely a part of it, and I won't deny you struck the Emperan a final blow. I wonder where that sword of yours is, though. Call it an academic interest.

Letters to Ultraman: Taro

Dear Taro,

Man, dude, you've grown! (Hmm, this opening sounds familiar.)

I have the most clear memories of you from my childhood--partly because once I got back into the fandom, I was able to watch a repeat run on satellite TV. The garish uniforms of ZAT! The novelty monsters! The ridiculous plots! THE CHEESE!

But at the same time, it was thanks to you that I learned about the Ultra Brothers, bonded beyond blood; and came to realise that sometimes, your family is where you find it. You had a father and a mother, just like me. Sometimes you messed up, but you tried to put things right. You were just very young, and trying to find your way in the world.

And then at the end of your battles, you disappeared.

When you returned, it was as mentor to the next generation of UltraWarriors. You, a training officer! It was hard to believe, and yet somehow it seemed right. Something changed in those years you spent away from home; perhaps you found yourself. There's a certain stability now that I don't remember there being before.

When I was younger, I wanted to be as strong and fight for justice, like you and your brethren. Now I still wish for your strength, but also your passion. Stay young at heart, old friend. Don't be afraid of the silliness of life, the strange plans or the weird people. They make life that much more colourful. I should know; that's what you did for me.

Letters to Ultraman: Mother of Ultra

Dear Ultra Mother,

Thanks to you I met one of my first favourites. Taro took a while to grow into his role but when he did, he did all of you proud!

They say that before your kindness the most savage of kaiju surrender. This I do not doubt. And yet it gave me a secret thrill to see you lay a smackdown on Belial. If he were reading, I'd give him a protip: you never stand between a woman and her family.

But there are many ways to make your way through the world. Fighting is one. Healing is certainly one. And various other combinations lie in between. As much as I respect those fighting for us, I have equal fervor for those attempting to mold the world through peace and mercy. There must be something worth it, having seen the fighters come and go through wars important and futile, and yet remaining unbittered by the world.

May the gods see fit to grant me a small part of your compassion, Marie!! Or was that Mary? Meh. I'm going to follow the rest of the Garrison and call you 'Mother'.

Letters to Ultraman: Leo

Dear Leo,

Here we are, 6-almost-7 billion people crammed onto one of the rare planets that harbours life in the universe. And walking somewhere amongst them, is a son whose birthplace is on no map.

I remember (mostly from Gekiden) a fiercely loyal, fiercely earnest young man, the sole survivor of his home's invasion. One devoted to both friends and family, suffering hideous loss and a few small gains. A young man who grew up strong and even fiercer, as the beast he was named after--but then, hey, look at your master. It's not everybody who gets chased with Jeeps.

And in turn, the task fell/will fall to you to mentor your master's son--full circle, if you like. What could you have told that snarling, belligerent ball of emotions, I wonder? The line about tears and their inability to save the world? Something about home? Anything at all about a father he never knew? Or did you just...not talk, and forge him into as best a warrior as you could?

No matter. Here you are now, wandering somewhere, seeing the world change with the years. Thousand of tears that may not save the world are shed, yet in the dark hours of humanity, when someone must stand or when someone must go, with you are many others, frightened perhaps, but ready to fight a good fight. Do not forsake them. Please.

We're small and scrappy and beautiful and ugly and fierce and quiet. But I'm glad you call this little blue planet your home, I'm glad it makes you happy (because Ootori Gen has a lovely smile) and I'm glad you're fighting for it.

Letters to Ultraman: Astra

Dear Astra,

They caught you, and they chained you, and depending on what sources you read they did irreversible things to you. But King was able to free you--almost. Not even he could break the Magmatic chain around your leg, and there it remains to this day.

I cannot imagine what they did. I pray nobody has to experience such things, frankly. But once you had recovered, you went straight to your brother and helped him out (despite getting captured once more). Nothing has been able to part you from Leo since.

Brothers, whether bound by blood or not, are something truly special. They are the ones who know your strengths and weaknesses, the secrets that nobody else knows and the joys nobody else can come close to sharing. Their fights are yours also—and damn those who would hurt them. Because, and especially in your case, they are a part of you, one irreplaceable.

Stick by that brother of yours. Take care of his temper and remind him what he fights for. You're lucky to have each other, and it's one chain I wouldn't break for the world.

Letters to Ultraman: King

Salutations, Your Majesty.

Recently you were given a brand new injection of cool, courtesy of ex-PM Koizumi. Stoner performance aside, it was a good appearance!

I wonder about your history, though. All will agree that you remain one of the more mysterious entities of Ultran history, off alone on your planet watching the stars in the heavens. Perhaps waiting. But you stuck up for Leo, saved Astra and helped out our Hikari,

Some of the numbers, put into context, don't seem to match up. Was there a time you were not 'King'? Prince, maybe? Are you actually royalty, or is it just a name? Why the red eyes, and the purple skin? What duty keeps you on King Planet, or any of your other outposts, far away from your people? And the greatest mystery of all is: why the heck did you think it was a good idea to imprison Belial within dropping distance of the Land of Light? I love Ultraman to pieces, but from that one movie I'm beginning to think strategy is not at all a strong point.

There is romance in mystery, true, but I prefer understanding. And so, understanding I will continue to seek...with your blessing.

Letters to Ultraman: Joe

Dear Joe,

Please excuse me for not using your full name. The...romanisation gives me palpitations.

While Japan squees over Ultra Retsuden, the first new series in 4 years or so, I pointedly ignore it for the sake of our first animated Ultra. The Kids, Gekiden, Ultra Nyan and the M78 Ultras came after you, yet somehow they never received quite the level of recognition you did.

Which, sadly, doesn't appear to be very high anyway, short of a few cursory appearances in one movie, and on group posters and things. Odd, because there was another first you managed to achieve for a small child watching after school on a little Southeast Asian peninsula: even the strongest of heroes have family, friends, comrades. Nobody fights alone. It planted the seed that UltraWarriors were people, too. Surely that's worth something - humanising a bunch of your idols and making them more relatable.

Wherever you may be fighting, seen or unseen, I pray that you are never too far from home.

Letters to Ultraman: 80

Dear 80,

I watched your series when I was 16, far far FAR away from your original broadcast year, and for some reason ended up crying at the fates of several monsters. Damnit, they're supposed to be dumb beasts! I'm not supposed to be crying for them! But I guess when you realize that not all the monsters are bad, you start to look at things…differently.

You came to Earth young and untried, with a hypothesis to prove and determined to fight it the only way you could: teach people not to be such monsters at heart, and fight the ones that did surface.

Looking at the papers I wonder how people can forget these things so easily.

Do you look back upon the Earth these days? Have your students made you proud, teacher? Man, I sure hope so. And I hope they gave you joy.

Take care of yourself and Yullian.

Letters to Ultraman: Yullian

Dear Yullian,

I have written to fighters, and eventually I'll start writing to healers. But I'm glad one letter is going out to someone who's also an out-and-out fangirl.

Don't get me wrong. It's good to see a woman fighting alongside the men (and if I interpret GinDen correctly, commanding a team of other female fighters). But to have evidence of an Ultran who's not only into fandom, but as open about it as decorum allows, is very exciting. You're one of us, so to speak, and it's metafantastic.

It has been, shall we say, unfashionable for a person of my age, let alone gender, to profess a love for giant silver superheroes. But I don't believe that only boys should get to flaunt their Ultraman tumblers if they want to, or that only girls should be able to openly appreciate great fashion. Fandom fires us up, fosters a safe space, gives us something deeper to hold on to beyond race, age and physical attributes. Nobody gets to tell you what should and shouldn't give you your passion in life.

Let's meet up one day, you and I. You can tell me about Ulterra. I will teach you how to speak LOLcat. And if you know where I can snag some good fanfiction, CALL ME. I don't often get to squee with my girls nowadays.

Letters to Ultraman: Chuck

Dear Chuck,

It gives me great pleasure to be addressing the leader of the Ultra Force, at last.

A leader's responsibilities are heavy, but you shoulder them with great skill. You are friend and advisor to the people below you; you are a source of stability and strength; you have the wisdom (and kindness) to discern the harmful from the not.

Your team fights at full strength, knowing they can count on you. And that, I believe, is one of the finest things you can do for them. May your path be clear, your mind sharp, and your skies always blue.

Letters to Ultraman: Scott

Dear Scott,

OK, let's see what I can still remember of Ultraman: The Adventure Begins (Ultraman USA). Three Ultras. Three robots. Four monsters. One humongous spaceship. And one really irritating scientist that your human host ended up wooing.

You and Susan still together, dude? Did you eventually part ways with Scott Masterson once the Sorkin threat had subsided? And what other threats came your way? (We will not speak of Belial's return. That was/will be a complete disgrace.)

I remember a powerful and proud warrior. His many beams. His two comrades. Three robots. Four foes. One spaceship. And one scientist who blew you a kiss through the windshield.

As much as it irritated me, I could understand it. Love is a noble thing to fight for, friend. Defend it, no matter what grumpy fangirls like myself might say.

Letters to Ultraman: Beth

Dear Beth,

At last! At last! There's an Ultrawoman on this list! I have awaited this day. It would be nice it you weren't the most recent named female fighter. Since you showed up we got the Internet, DVDs and a whole new century!

You were an integral part of the Ultra Force with your water manipulation and fighting skills. I wonder where the rest of the female fighters are? Are Ultran women just naturally predisposed to healing over fighting, like in Story 0? Or are there simply no more than a handful who decided their path demanded destruction over creation? If they fight like you and Yullian, it's a puzzle as to why we haven't seen very many more.

You are not Ul-tera-man, 'sword of the shining grounds'; you are ul-tera-uman, a 'red sword of the shining grounds'. A weapon already familiar with pain. One who fights because she must. I suspect the Land of Light has moved beyond the challenges human women and girls must face. In fact, I hope for it. It would be pretty damn depressing if an enlightened, advanced society such as Ulterra still has a problem with objectifying its women.

Anyhow, stand strong. Stand proud. And fight with all you've got!
