Letters to Ultraman: Joe ウルトラマンへの手紙：ジョー

Dear Joe,

Please excuse me for not using your full name. The...romanisation gives me palpitations.

While Japan squees over Ultra Retsuden, the first new series in 4 years or so, I pointedly ignore it for the sake of our first animated Ultra. The Kids, Gekiden, Ultra Nyan and the M78 Ultras came after you, yet somehow they never received quite the level of recognition you did.

Which, sadly, doesn't appear to be very high anyway, short of a few cursory appearances in one movie, and on group posters and things. Odd, because there was another first you managed to achieve for a small child watching after school on a little Southeast Asian peninsula: even the strongest of heroes have family, friends, comrades. Nobody fights alone. It planted the seed that UltraWarriors were people, too. Surely that's worth something - humanising a bunch of your idols and making them more relatable.

Wherever you may be fighting, seen or unseen, I pray that you are never too far from home.

フルネームを使わないことを許してください。公式ローマ字で動悸感が走る。

日本が4念ぶりの新シリーズウルトラ列伝に夢中になりながら、それを完全無視して市場最初のアニメウルトラマンに集中する。
キッズや激伝、ウルトラニャン、M78ウルトラマンが君の時代以後現れただけど、なぜか君の様な認識レベルは達していないと思います。

そのレベルですけど、ぞんざいな映画登場や集合のメディアなどに出るぐらいね。
不思議なものです。
なぜならある東南アジアで放課後テレビを見ている子供にある物を気づかせました。
それはどんな強いヒーローも、家族や友達や仲間がいること。
誰も一人で戦っていない。
「ウルトラ戦士も人なんだ」という種を埋め込んだ。
崇拝するものに人間性を与え関連付きやすくすることに、価値がある。

君はどこで戦っても、見えていても見えなくていても、故郷から遠く離れないことを祈る。
