Letters to Ultraman: Zoffy ウルトラマンへの手紙：ゾフィー

Dear Zoffy,

Salutations, Captain. How have you been doing? Not falling off any more buildings or getting your head set on fire, I hope.

What we see of you seems to swing between two extremes: the super badass Zoffy that fights in the Ultran War, helps Earth and sacrifices himself for his brothers, and the super klutzy Zoffy that gets his head set on fire, falls of buildings and gets thrown into electrical fields.

It was the first Zoffy that really impressed me, when I saw him in Gekiden. Seeing you take command of the Brothers, lead them into battle and handle the Psy-Baltan onslaught while the others fought the Steel Devas was outstanding. This guy was super special. I wrote fanfiction about this Zoffy. He had a woman who loved him, a mission to accomplish, and a destiny to fulfil.

It was just as cheesy as it sounds. But I promise you that one day it will be rewritten, and it will be much, much better.

But the second Zoffy puzzled me, because he was just as valid as the previous one. He was the same person, but...utterly lacking.. How could this have happened? Wasn't he supposed to be cool?

It took some years, witnessing you flipflop between these two extremes (oh, the flipflops) but then I did realise one thing: this guy didn't have to be cool, or uncool. He just had to be Zoffy: Zoffy, eldest of the Ultra Brothers, war veteran, earnest and upright and dignified, fighting for his brothers and the tiny people under his charge. He had bad days and good days, but through it all he tried his hardest at all he did. That was enough.

Still, try not to fall off any more buildings, please. You're better than that.　You must admit cool Zoffy is so much more attractive.

ゾフィーへ

こんばんは、隊長。お元気にしていましたか？
建物から落っこちたり頭を点火されたりはないでしょうね。

私たちが見てる君は、両極端の身。
ウルトラ大戦争に参戦し地球を守り兄弟のために身を犠牲にする超凄いゾフィーと、
頭を燃やされ建物から落ち電磁フィールドに投げ込まれた超ドジなゾフィー。

前者のゾフィーに感心した。激伝で兄弟の指揮を執って戦場に向かい、そして自らPsy=バルタンと交戦してほかの兄弟を鋼魔四天王の後を追わせることが非常に感動しました。
このやつが特別だった。もっと若かったころに、このゾフィーを基に小説を書きました。彼に愛する女がいて、やるべき使命があり、そしてあるかなえる運命が待っていた。

読んでいる通りかなりやばい小説だった。でも私は約束する。
いつかはソノ話を書き直して、もっともっとよい作品にする。

後者のゾフィーで、困惑を感じ始めた。
その彼が、前者と同じぐらいに正当な存在だった。
しかし同じ人とはいえ、欠けているところがこんなに…
どうやってこのことが起こったのでしょうか？ゾフィーは、かっこよくなかったでしょうか？

何年間をかけて極端から極端への変化を（何度も）見て、やっとあるものに気づいた。
カッコよくいるはずがない。カッコわるくいるはずもない。
このひとが、ただ「ゾフィー」でいるべき。
ウルトラ兄弟の長男　ウルトラ大戦争のベテラン　凛として真面目で正義感強く　兄弟のために、そして小さき命のために戦い続けるゾフィーで。
その彼に良い頃もあり悪い頃もあり、精一杯頑張り続けている。それだけで十分。

とはいえ、もう建物から落ちないよう注意してくださいね。
カッコいいゾフィーはより魅力的であると君自身も認めるでしょう。
