Letters to Ultraman: Zero

Dear Zero,

Well. This might be a little awkward. While you still remind me of a cheap gangster, I suppose that is not entirely your fault. Besides, I set out to write 36 letters to 36 Ultrawarriors, and you happen to be the first. Even if I haven't seen your movie yet.

You, after all, are currently the rookie.

I've been watching your kind for more than half my life, so perhaps I have some insight I can contribute. Permit me to share some tips the new guy might find useful (although he has the edge in years):

Be not proud. Ask Jack about Hideki Goh some time. Or ask Taro about his time on Earth with Tenpera Seijin. I suspect he will squirm, at least a little bit.

Be humble. You will not always be the strongest, fastest, or wisest...nor will you always be the youngest, newest or most vulnerable.

I would tell you to believe in your comrades, but I think you might have that down with the Ultimate Force Zero.

Find your family where you can. They don't have to be bound by blood. And if you can write to your mother, write to your mother.

Love the world. It takes less energy than hating it, which is important when your energy is at a three-minute premium.

Come to Earth some time. And stop by the other parts of the world some time. Great and Powered can help you out with perspective. Ask your father about Hawaii. Sadly, monsters do not only arise within the confines of one island nation.

Love what you do. It's not everything you need, but it's a pretty good step.

Good luck. And give Pigmon an added pat on the head for us.

Activity update

So, a quick update on things:

1. After about a year and a half of diddling around with it, the Tsubutter logs from 2010 are DONE! Just have to watermark the PDFs and you, too, can enjoy what passed for memes in Japan one year ago.
2. I've watched Ginga Densetsu, but  I do not have particularly kind words about it. Haven't seen Revenge of Belial (the Zero-centric movie that showed up while I was away from this blog). A kind commenter has pointed me to versions of the Zeromovie trailers that were NOT blocked outside of Japan, but Tsuburaya's decision to wall out its international fans still rankles. I will not be seeing this movie...at least until a Japanese version shows up here in the shops.
3. We're 36 days away from Ultraman's 45th anniversary (hurray!) and every Ultra's getting a letter in their intergalactic mailbox. I'm starting with Zero and working my way back down to the original Ultraman.

That's all the news for now. Thanks for staying tuned, and enjoy 36 days of Letters to Ultraman.

Happy Chinese New Year from Ultrandom! Expect to see more mythological material in the coming year. Work has been busy, but I'm not giving up on this little blog just yet. Thank you as always for reading, and have a great Year of the Tiger ahead!

* At 1:24 it sounds like he's saying 'Seigi wo motanai chikara ga donna ni kiken na mono ka,  kare ha mada shiranai ndesu' (He still doesn't know just how dangerous strength without justice is). I could be wrong. I hope I'm wrong! :O
