Letters to Ultraman: Leo ウルトラマンへの手紙：レオ

Dear Leo,

Here we are, 6-almost-7 billion people crammed onto one of the rare planets that harbours life in the universe. And walking somewhere amongst them, is a son whose birthplace is on no map.

I remember (mostly from Gekiden) a fiercely loyal, fiercely earnest young man, the sole survivor of his home's invasion. One devoted to both friends and family, suffering hideous loss and a few small gains. A young man who grew up strong and even fiercer, as the beast he was named after--but then, hey, look at your master. It's not everybody who gets chased with Jeeps.

And in turn, the task fell/will fall to you to mentor your master's son--full circle, if you like. What could you have told that snarling, belligerent ball of emotions, I wonder? The line about tears and their inability to save the world? Something about home? Anything at all about a father he never knew? Or did you just...not talk, and forge him into as best a warrior as you could?

No matter. Here you are now, wandering somewhere, seeing the world change with the years. Thousand of tears that may not save the world are shed, yet in the dark hours of humanity, when someone must stand or when someone must go, with you are many others, frightened perhaps, but ready to fight a good fight. Do not forsake them. Please.

We're small and scrappy and beautiful and ugly and fierce and quiet. But I'm glad you call this little blue planet your home, I'm glad it makes you happy (because Ootori Gen has a lovely smile) and I'm glad you're fighting for it.

レオへ、

そろそろ７億の数になる人が　この広い宇宙に散らばっている生命を育める惑星の一つにヒシヒシ詰まっている。
そしてその中に地球に生まれてこなかった地球人が一人歩いている。

私の（激伝ばかりの）記憶にいるのは、忠誠でド真面目の青年、そして故郷の侵略から逃れたたった一人の生存者。
仲間や家族のために戦いながら、とんでもない損失やわずかな利益を味わった。
青年が名前の獣のようにより強く、よりたくましく育った。
でもまあ、厳しい師匠を持っていたね。
ジープで追い回される者はめったにないと思う。

そしてその師匠の息子を指導する事になった/なる。
物事が一回転するように。
その怒りに燃えて気強い感情の塊に何を言えたのでしょうか？
その涙の救世可能の名セリフ？「故郷」のはなし？
知られていない父親の事？
それとも何もいわずに　分かっている風に戦士に鍛えようとした？

まあ、それにかかわらず
君はここにどこかをさすらい、世界が帰ることを見届ける。
世界を救えない幾千の涙が流されるが、人類の暗い時代に

誰かが立たねばならぬとき

誰かが行かねばならぬとき

戦う覚悟で君が幾人とともにある。

私たちは小さくて気強く　美しく　醜く　気高く　穏やかなる。
でもこの小さな青い惑星を「故郷」と呼んでうれしい。
ここに幸せであってうれしい（オオトリ・ゲンの笑顔はすてきだから）
この星のために戦っていて、ありがとう。
