Letters to Ultraman: Agul ウルトラマンへの手紙：アグル

(In a completely heinous act of omission, I forgot that Boy is actually not on the List of Official Ultras--and left out Nice! Nice is a totally awesome dude all-round, so I'll be writing his letter and posting it along with Gaia's. This post was originally written for 22 July.)

Dear Agul,

Hail, warrior of the sea. Ah, you: the very first anti-hero, completely non-red Ultra. Hikari may owe part of his fans to your presence.

While you had no faith in humanity at first (something I find completely understandable, some days), it is good that somebody made you believe we were not completely irredeemable. The sea is a vast, unexplored place: rough, cold, full of strange dark places and sharp-toothed beasts. Yet is can also be deep and warm--after all, life itself began in its bosom, long years ago.

And it was life again that touched your heart. How is Reiko, by the way? Seems to me y'all were doing pretty well last time we saw you. Humans are capable of great good, as well as great destruction, and in our hearts is the same unbound capability to love as well as hate. But I should have to tell you that. You have seen it with your own eyes, when you were fighting against Gaia. And with him.

A man is worth no less when he turns a softer, kinder side to the world, or when he shows emotion. It is simply being true to one's self. I'm going to tell another Ultraman Land story now: when I last went, I saw you giving a little girl a ride on your shoulder. Agul, the cool, unwavering warrior, with little love for humanity and its shenanigans, making a little girl's day. Secretly, it made mine, too.

Live well, big blue, and spend lots of time with your family and friends. If anyone deserves life's small happinesses, certainly it is you.

アグルへ

やあ、海の戦士。ここぞ最初のアンチヒーロー、そして最初の完全に赤みのないウルトラ戦士。
ヒカリのファンの数にも影響があるかね。

最初は人類への信頼がなまったくなくても、ある人たちに救いようがあったと気づかせてよかった。
（ある日にその信頼のなさが無理もないだと感じるとはいえ）
海は広くてまだ良く知られていない。荒いし冷たいし、暗いところや牙盛りだくさんの捕食者もいる。
しかし同時に深くて暖かい―所詮海の懐に生物が芽生えたなのだから。

そしてその「生物」に、心をとらわれたんですね。
ところで、玲子さんは元気にしているでしょうか？
最後に見たときは上手くいっているようだったね。
人間は破壊とともに、大いなる善も可能。
その心に、憎むように愛する無限の可能がある。
私が言うまでもないだけどね。
きみは既にその目で見ていたはず。ガイアと戦っていたときに、そしてガイアとともに戦っていたときに。

より優しい面を世界に見せて、感情を見せても、人間の価値は下がらない。
それがただ自分に忠実であること。
またウルトラマンランドの昔懐かしい話で走りますけど、
最後に行ったときは、君が少女を肩車しているのを見た。
クールで一歩も引かない　人間のやることにあんまり好意もない戦士アグルが小さい子を喜ばせていた。
密かにこっちまで幸せな気分になっちゃった。

よく生きるのです。そして家族と仲間と、たっぷり時間をすごしてね。
人生のささやかな幸せを味わえるべき者がいたら、君はその一人である。
