Letters to Ultraman: Mebius ウルトラマンへの手紙：メビウス

Dear Mebius,

Ah, my boy, but you've really grown!

I remember watching you in your first Earthbound fight, dodging behind buildings and giving Aihara Ryuu aneurysms. It was an awkward start, to say the least.

Luckily, though, you learned fast. And you were willing to learn. You're a walking example of lifelong learning. To Hibino Mirai, everything was new, nothing was bad, and everyone was a potential friend. (Is it any wonder that I call you 'puppy'?) And you had a great set of friends with you. I hope you still keep in touch with GUYS. Granted, I think Ryuu yells too much and he drives me up the wall, but obviously you see something in him - so I will drop the subject. Were they a part of your decision to 'come out', so to speak?

I don't know if you realize the size of the precedent you set, kiddo. Maybe, before your time, your predecessors thought humans wouldn't be able to handle the truth that their hero was walking among them. Or that maybe it would threaten the people around them, that others would exploit them for such precious information. You can't extract knowledge that wasn't there in the first place. Or worse still, that if they knew they would perversely turn upon them instead.

But you know, I'm glad you made that choice. I'm glad that you trusted us enough to do it. And I'm glad we didn't let you down.We watched a young warrior grow from a rookie into a true fighter - and with the presence of mind to analyze it. (I saw your trainer, too, but when I was much younger.) He stood and he fought for justice, and he fought for his friends, and he battled despair and pain. And came out on top. He brought new friends. And he was surrounded by the grand old names who were the reason he stood on Earth. It was good, seeing a world that you knew from before and how the past influenced the future.

You've really grown, Mebius, and it warms my heart to see it. I hope that the world never beats you down. We need your cheerfulness and hope. May you see with eyes that are ever new; may there be more good things than bad ones; and may you meet a new friend every day. Keep on smiling. Try different kinds of curry.

You, and me, and everyone - we have a future as huge as the sky.

P.S. - Please make sure Hikari gets some sleep. I told him to get some rest but I bet he's not taking my advice. He'll probably listen to you. You make a great team.

メビウスへ

本当に大きくなったなあ、君！

地球で最初の戦いで君が建物の裏に身を潜め　アイハラリュウに動脈瘤を起こさせそう事を覚えている。ちょっと気まずいスタートだったよね。

だけど運がよく、君がすぐに何もかもを学べました。その上に、学習意欲がたっぷりあった。
君は常に「生涯学習」というコンセプトそのものでいる。
ヒビノミライにとって、全てが新鮮で、悪い物がなく、出会う人はみんな友達となりそうだった。
（君の事を子犬って呼ぶのも納得できるね？）
そして君にとてもいい友達が付いていた。
今でもGUYSと連絡を保っていると願っている。
リュウはやかましくておかしくなりそうだけど、君は明らかに彼に何かを見いだしている…ので、その話はやめにする。
彼らが「本体を明かす」という決意の理由の一つだったのでしょうか？

君が作った前例が、どんなに大きかったと知っているのかな。
もし君の時代までは、君の前任者は　英雄が大衆に紛れている事に持ちこたえないと思ったかもしれない。
あるいは、その知識が周りの人を危機に陥って、悪に付け込まれる恐れもあった。最初からまったくない情報は、引き出されることはない。
あるいは最悪、その情報を得たら人間がひねくれて裏切ることになると思っていた。

でもね、君がその決断をして嬉しく思う。
そんなに私たちを信じて、嬉しい。
そして私たちも君の期待を裏切れずにすんでよかった。
私たちが、若い戦士のルーキーから真なるウルトラマンへの成長を見とどけた－そして今度、分析できる余裕もあった。
（君の教官の活躍は前に見たけど、あれは小さいころだったので）
その若い戦士が正義の為に立ち上がって戦い、仲間のために戦い、絶望と苦しみに戦い勝利をつかんだ。
彼とともに新しい仲間ができた。
そして彼の周りに、地球に立っている理由の大御所もいた。
前から知っていた世界を　過去がどんな風に未来に影響を与えたのを見てとても良かった。

本当に成長したんだな、メビウス。見て心温まるぐらいに。
世界がやがて君をひれ伏せない事を望む。
君の明るさ、そして君の希望がある者が今必要なんです。
いつも新鮮の目で見るよう　悪いことより良いことがたくさんあるよう　毎日新しい友達に会えるように。
笑って。笑い続けて。いろんなカレーを食べてみて。

君も　私も　みんなも　空のように無限大の未来がある。
